Genie, voiced by Robin Williams, was designed by Eric Goldberg, who had a lot of morphing and transformations to work with while creating the Genie. He wears two gold cuffs around his wrist, which he reveals aren’t a fashion statement, but rather a prison sentence, to represent the real life of a Genie “all the power in the work, itty bitty living space”. He is (as appears to be) shirtless, wearing pants (when he has legs) that are a darker blue than his skin tone and a red belt. Genie is made blue as he is the ultimate source of Good in the film, while Jafar (the villain) is made wearing red (or red when a genie himself) to indicate that he is evil. The design of Genie Jafar really depicts the Evil that he represents.įor the rendition of the Genie, Disney began using colors to help indicate whether a person was good or bad. He is completely red and actually looks more like the devil himself with his beard. When transforming into a Genie, Jafar takes a form similar to that of the good Genie, possessing a strong upper body and two cuffs around his wrist (which are his shackles). After meeting the Genie however, he wants to possess the genie, so that he can be the most powerful being, but after little convincing, Jafar finally realizes that what he really wants is to be a Genie himself, to have all the power in the cosmos, not considering the burdens that come with being a genie (specifically, being confined in a small lamp), is how he is defeated.Įarly sketches show that Jafar was always to be depicted as a twisted looking man, giving him sharp facial features if not evil facial expressions. He tries to convince Jasmines father that hell bear the burden of marrying Jasmine if she cant find a suitor in time. Jafar wants to become the most powerful being present, in the beginning, that being a sultan. He carries around a golden staff, shaped like a snake, which he uses to hypnotize others to do his bidding. Overall, he is a thin, off looking fellow, but he is the sultans advisor. ![]() Jafar wears long robes that drag behind him, having pointed shoulders to them, He wears a large turban and has a twisted thin beard. This rendition of Jasmine gave her short, black curly hair, but still kept the midriff top and the loose, rather baggy pants.Īs stated before, Jafar was given many tones of red to really emphasize the fact that he is the evil one in the film. ![]() This rendition of an early Raja and Jasmine shows the different types of hairstyles animators attempted before sticking with the final product. Her best friend is her pet tiger named Raja, who is the only person that she shows complete and utter love and affection for in the beginning, showing a rather forced and upset demeanor when around her father. For each rendition of Jasmine, animators added a headdress, whether it be typical for middle eastern culture or a more intricate crown, all concept sketches of Jasmine involve her wearing something on her head, giving her a look that a princess by birth deserves. Disney picked attributes from each of their best concept sketches, the result being the Jasmine we know now. She is given many different tries at a headpiece to indicate that she is indeed royalty, specifically, the daughter of the sultan. She is given large earrings, part of the middle eastern culture that Disney is setting for the movie. These renditions of Princess Jasmine mainly show the culture of the ethnic community of Agrabah, adding different patterns to her outfits. This rendition of princess Jasmine however underwent a large multitude of different renditions, starting with the youngest, which portrays princess jasmine as a child.Īnimators not only played with her age, they also played with her facial structure, features and color scheme for clothing. When it was time to decide on one of the final renderings, Disney animators limited the choices down to these. ![]() She also wears what looks like heavy, gold jewelry, wearing two large triangular earrings and a thick chain resting on her neck. She wears matching pants along with blue shoes. She also usually wears a light blue, cropped tube top revealing her midriff and her navel with sewn-in sleeves for her arms, allowing her figure to be shown, which in reality is a complete opposite for what most middle eastern cultures allow, which is where Disney takes element of Indian culture). She wears her hair in a ponytail, held together by 2 light blue bands. The Final design of Princess Jasmine portrays her as a young woman (around the age of 18 or 16) with long black hair styled in a ponytail, tan skin, big, curious eyes and a slim, hourglass figure.
